Meteorological Alert Issued for Lanzarote and Other Canary Islands
The Canary Islands government, through the Directorate General for Emergencies, has issued a pre-alert for coastal phenomena affecting El Hierro, Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, and La Graciosa, starting from midnight on Monday, July 20.
This decision is based on information from the State Meteorological Agency and other available sources, in accordance with the Specific Emergency Plan for Adverse Meteorological Phenomena in the Canary Islands.
Strong north-easterly winds are expected in the inter-island marine channels, with speeds reaching between 50 to 61 km/h (Force 7) particularly south of the channel between Tenerife and Gran Canaria and offshore in south-eastern Gran Canaria.
In the north-eastern coasts of El Hierro, wave heights could reach up to 3.25 metres, with significant heights above 2 metres along other northern and eastern coastlines of the island. Similarly, waves in Tenerife and Gran Canaria may exceed 2.5 metres, especially along Tenerife’s south-eastern coast and Gran Canaria’s western shores.
In Lanzarote and La Graciosa, wave heights of 2 to 2.5 metres are anticipated, with isolated waves potentially reaching twice this height.
