Heatwave Continues in the Canary Islands
The Canary Islands will face persistently high temperatures this Friday, 17 July, with a mix of heat, light haze in elevated areas, and tropical nights in the most affected regions. The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) reports that temperatures will largely remain stable, although some inland areas may see a slight decline.
Cloudy skies are expected in the north of the more mountainous islands at elevations below 800 to 1,000 metres, with clearer spells around midday. The rest of the islands will experience partly cloudy or clear skies, though higher areas might see some haze.
Maximum temperatures will range from about 32°C in Tenerife to approximately 16°C in El Hierro. In Gran Canaria, particularly hot areas could see temperatures rise beyond 34°C.
Winds will primarily blow from the north-east, with strong gusts likely on the eastern slopes and in higher regions. Light to moderate south-westerly winds will prevail in the summit areas, while coastal breezes will ease conditions along the western shores.
In Las Palmas province, a similar forecast of cloudy skies in northern Gran Canaria at lower altitudes is expected to clear somewhat during the day. Lanzarote and Fuerteventura will see partly cloudy or clear skies, with possible cloud cover in western areas overnight.
While inland minimum temperatures will drop slightly, coastal regions are likely to remain stable. Afternoon highs in some mid-altitude areas of the Tirajana basin, as well as in the southeast, may still reach 34°C, with temperatures in many southern and western locales expected to surpass 30°C.
Nighttime conditions will remain warm, with minimum temperatures in the most affected areas rarely dropping below 24°C to 26°C. In Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, temperatures are forecasted between 23°C and 27°C.
Wind conditions will be a significant factor, with strong north-easterly winds expected on the north-western and south-eastern slopes of Gran Canaria, while breezes along the south-western coast may provide some relief.
Overall, the Canary Islands will continue experiencing warm conditions with light haze at higher altitudes, temperatures exceeding 30°C in several locales, and tropical nights in Gran Canaria’s most impacted areas.
