Lightpainting Exhibition Opens in Yaiza
Photographer Rosa García unveiled 28 stunning lightpainting artworks at the Casa de la Cultura Benito Pérez Armas in Yaiza. These images, created without AI or photo montages, showcase the beauty of Lanzarote, predominantly from the Yaiza region, captured through a unique technique that uses light sources to ‘paint’ pictures.
The exhibition, titled Yaiza es Luz, invites visitors to experience the vivid stories behind each piece. During the opening event, attended by César Rijo, the councillor for Culture, García expressed her hope that viewers would discover the tales hidden in Lanzarote’s corners.
The artworks are described as chapters of a single narrative, guiding spectators to explore various locations and historical contexts, including the haunting remains of migrant boats washed ashore after perilous journeys.
García, who comes from an artistic family—her mother was a professional photographer and her father a poet—sought to convey emotions deeply rooted in Yaiza’s landscape. The exhibition also features lanterns and handmade light devices that demonstrate the creation of impossible forms, visible only after a lengthy exposure time. “Light can illuminate a landscape while revealing a different perspective,” she noted.
The exhibition runs until 12 August, open Monday to Friday from 8:00 AM to 1:30 PM and 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM, and Saturdays from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Guided tours and two-day lightpainting workshops are also scheduled for 7 and 8 August, with local residents encouraged to register by emailing [email protected]. Yaiza continues to prioritise cultural initiatives that promote diverse creative expressions.
