Gáldar Kicks Off 544th Santiago Festival with Inspirational Speech
The 544th Santiago Festival in Gáldar began on Friday with a heartfelt opening speech from local journalist Victorio Pérez Moreno. Speaking at the Cultural Centre Guaires, Pérez dedicated the event to his late father, a theatre technician, and encouraged attendees to participate fully in the festivities.
Pérez shared memories from his childhood, recalling experiences such as dressing up in costumes made by his grandmother and proudly carrying the Santiago flag. He spoke about the importance of community, urging everyone to come together, stating, “We are a stronger people when united.”
During his speech, he presented a visual journey of Gáldar’s transformation from ancient times to the present day, emphasising the need for community engagement. “We need moments to connect and silence the negativity in the world,” he remarked, thanking Gáldar for “making me feel like a prophet in my own land.”
Local mayor Teodoro Sosa praised Pérez for his humility and strong ties to the community. He asserted that Pérez’s achievements have not changed his character, stating, “You are a remarkable Gáldar native, and tonight your town has shown you its love.”
The deputy mayor, Julio Mateo Castillo, noted the significance of this year’s festival as it sets the stage for the Holy Year of 2027. He expressed gratitude to Pérez for his unwavering pride in Gáldar.
The event began with a performance by Patricia Muñoz and concluded with the official anthem of Gáldar, “A Bolero for Gáldar.” The festival is organised by the local council’s Culture and Festivities department, led by Castillo.
