Rain is returning to the Canary Islands this weekend as temperatures cool down following a recent heatwave that saw some areas exceed 40 degrees. The heat, marked as the first of summer, has ended, and the cooling Trade Winds are bringing moisture that will likely lead to light rains across the archipelago.
The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) predicts a small weather front will approach from the north on Saturday. This will first impact La Palma and then move southwest, with possible rainfall expected in Tenerife, La Gomera, El Hierro, and Gran Canaria. The rain is expected to be light and scattered, with more substantial amounts in the eastern areas of Tenerife and La Palma.
According to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), here’s the forecast for the upcoming days:
Saturday:
Morning will be cloudy with light rain in Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, and the north of the other islands, while the rest will be partly cloudy or clear. In the afternoon, cloud cover will increase in the central southern and southeastern regions, possibly leading to occasional rain. Temperatures will remain stable or rise slightly in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, while the mountainous areas will see minimal changes on the coast and slight drops inland. Expect light to moderate winds from the north, shifting to the west at higher altitudes.
Sunday:
Cloudy intervals are expected in Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, and the northern parts of the other islands, with light, occasional rain likely early and late in the day. The afternoon will see generally clear skies. In mountainous areas, there will be cloudy intervals, particularly on southern, southeastern, and western slopes, with occasional rain possible. Coastal temperatures will remain stable, while inland areas may experience slight declines. Winds will be light to moderate from the northeast, generally light from the west at hilltops.
Monday:
Conditions will remain partly cloudy, primarily clear in the afternoons, apart from the southern and western slopes of the western islands. There’s a chance of light, occasional rain early in the day in the northern mountainous areas. Minimum temperatures will stay stable or drop slightly, while maximums will remain unchanged or rise slightly. Winds will be light to moderate from the northeast, again generally weak from the west at higher elevations.
