New Public Library Breaks Ground in Ingenio
The Gran Canaria Cabildo is investing €4 million—86.4% of the total cost—into a new public library in Ingenio. President Antonio Morales and Mayor Vanesa Martín participated in the groundbreaking ceremony held on Thursday at the site of the former agricultural market, which will be transformed into a cultural and educational hub.
The project aims to revitalize a historically significant location, turning the old La Cantonera building into a modern space for knowledge and community interaction. The total investment for the library is €4,630,162.81, partly funded by the local government.
Architect Manuel Méndez Bordón highlighted the design’s blend of historical references and contemporary functionality, stating, “We’ve designed a flexible, open library that meets current and future needs while honouring the memory of its location.” The facility will include the Municipal Historical Archive, dedicated research areas, tech and robotics workshops, coworking spaces, individual and group study rooms, a multimedia classroom, and outdoor activity spaces.
Morales emphasised the vital role of libraries in fostering democracy and critical thinking, calling them “civil temples of knowledge and culture.” He urged for increased investment in education and shared spaces to combat radicalization and promote civic values.
Mayor Martín acknowledged the collaboration behind the project, stating, “This library is a culmination of years of effort, and finally, Ingenio will have a cultural space that meets our community’s needs.”
The new library, spanning approximately 1,000 square metres, is expected to open within 18 months, aiming to be a key cultural resource for Ingenio and a model for knowledge access and innovation across the island.
