Tenerife Showcases Its Potential as an International Animation Hub at Annecy Festival
Tenerife has reinforced its status as an international animation hub at the MIFA International Animation Film Market, held this week during the Annecy Festival in France. The event took place on June 23 and 24 and is one of the industry’s key global gatherings, connecting creators with producers and buyers. The island’s delegation, which included local animation studios and firms, highlighted Tenerife’s capabilities in the animation sector.
Lope Afonso, Vice President and Tourism Councillor, stated that Tenerife’s participation in MIFA aligns with a clear strategy to diversify the island’s tourism and economic model, focusing on high-value sectors such as audiovisual production, particularly animation.
Afonso noted that Tenerife offers unique advantages, including local talent, legal security, tax incentives, connectivity, and specialised infrastructure, which can help attract investment and create qualified job opportunities.
Dimple Melwani, CEO of Tenerife Tourism, emphasised that being part of MIFA enhances the island’s international position as a prime destination for the animation industry, supported by a solid professional ecosystem and competitive infrastructure. She mentioned the forthcoming second edition of Quirino Lab, scheduled for October in Tenerife.
The delegation, led by Melwani and the Tenerife Film Commission team, showcased the island’s professional ecosystem and fiscal incentives, reinforcing its appeal for companies and individuals looking to develop projects in animation. Local animation studios showcased their 2D and 3D services, discussed project developments, and sought new partnerships for co-productions.
New additions to the delegation included PipelinePro, Tomavision Studio, Atlantis Animation, and others. On June 24, Proexca and Zona ZEC, with support from the Canary Islands Audiovisual Cluster, hosted a networking event to foster potential collaborations and promote the advantages of Tenerife and the Canary Islands in animation.
The animation sector made a significant impact in 2025, with five animated feature films (four international and one Spanish) and two series benefiting from tax incentives. The total investment in animation projects reached €15.2 million, generating 2,942 workdays and employing 910 people within the industry.
Additionally, investment in post-production projects specifically for animation saw substantial growth, rising from €2.7 million in 2024 to €4.2 million in 2025, solidifying Tenerife’s position as a hub for advanced digital post-production and VFX services.
