Juventudes Socialistas de Lanzarote and La Graciosa have expressed concern over the lack of caretaker staff at IES San Bartolomé since the start of the school year on 1 September.
A statement from the school on 26 October revealed that the need for a substitute had been communicated to the relevant educational authorities in August, but as of the statement’s date, no replacement had been appointed.
This absence has disrupted the school’s daily operations, forcing other staff to take on additional responsibilities. As a result, the school has altered its opening hours, suspended reprographic services, and limited administrative support for families.
Agustín Leandro Viñoly García, vice-secretary of education for Juventudes Socialistas, highlighted the importance of having a caretaker. He said, “A school should not start the year without this essential role filled. This affects the organisation of the school, family support, and daily operations.”
He urged the Department of Education, led by Poli Suárez, to address the situation and provide the necessary resources to ensure the school can function properly.
Juventudes Socialistas is calling for a swift resolution to restore normal operations at IES San Bartolomé and to prevent similar issues in other schools across the island. They emphasised that public education needs proper planning and resources to meet the actual needs of schools.
