The XXXV Canary Islands Championship of Traditional Sailing resumed on Saturday morning with the fifth and sixth races taking place, despite light winds in the bay of Puerto del Rosario. Due to the poor conditions, the Race Committee had to relocate the racing area to ensure safety and competitiveness.
Before launching their boats, crew members observed a minute’s silence at the Insular Nautical Centre in memory of the victims of a recent train accident in Toledo. The sailing community expressed its condolences to the affected families and wished a swift recovery for those injured.
Saturday’s races faced challenging wind conditions, forcing the Race Committee to begin the first heat shortly after midday. The Jameos del Agua, helmed by Alfredo Morales, led early but lost ground due to the flukey winds. The Di Napoli – Isidoro and Manuela III took the lead during the first downwind leg and maintained it to win the race.
In the fifth race, the barquillo captained by José Pascual Perdomo won, strengthening its position in the overall classification. Kevin Cabrera’s Tritón finished second, followed by Orlando Umpiérrez’s Sofcan Ingenieros.
Jameos del Agua Claims Second Victory
The boats had to wait nearly an hour before the start of the second race. Wind conditions remained tricky, but eventually, speeds increased to six knots, allowing the race to go ahead after a general recall.
Alfredo Morales’s Jameos del Agua won the second heat, crossing the finish line ahead of Nete Armas’s Graciplus, with Di Napoli – Isidoro and Manuela III securing third place. David Martín’s Romertito and Omar Ramón’s Haría rounded out the top five.
Di Napoli – Isidoro and Manuela III Extends Lead
With the win and third place from the second race, Di Napoli – Isidoro and Manuela III solidified its lead in the championship standings with 7 points, nine points ahead of Tritón and eleven points clear of Playa Blanca. Both Jameos del Agua and Romerito sit in fourth place with 27 points.
The final day of the championship is set for Sunday morning, with the first signal scheduled for 11:00. The last two races will be broadcast live on Televisión Canaria, with special coverage from Puerto del Rosario, Fuerteventura.
