Tenerife’s local government has activated a preventive emergency plan from 10am on Sunday, November 1, as a storm is expected to bring heavy and persistent rainfall to the island’s metropolitan area. The Cabildo de Tenerife, through its Department of Natural Environment, Sustainability, Security, and Emergencies, advises local councils to implement their emergency plans.
This decision follows forecasts from the Spanish Meteorological Agency (AEMET) predicting intense rainfall, with potential thunderstorms from midday on Sunday, particularly in northern Tenerife and the metropolitan area, where conditions could be severe.
The Canary Islands’ Directorate-General for Emergencies has declared an alert for heavy rainfall from noon on Sunday, along with a pre-alert for thunderstorms under the Specific Emergency Plan for Adverse Meteorological Phenomena (PEFMA).
President of the Cabildo, Rosa Dávila, emphasised that the priority is to safeguard public safety and prepare for the possible impacts of the storm. She urged residents to remain cautious, avoid unnecessary travel in high-risk areas such as ravines and flood-prone zones, and to heed emergency services’ advice.
Blanca Pérez, the island’s councillor for Natural Environment, highlighted that the emergency plan’s activation ensures that all available resources can respond swiftly as needed. She stressed the importance of closely monitoring rain forecasts, particularly for the northern and metropolitan areas.
Residents are advised to secure items on balconies and terraces and stay informed through official channels. The Cabildo will continue to monitor weather developments and adjust preventive measures accordingly.
