Weather Alert Issued for La Palma and Tenerife
The Canary Islands government has declared a weather alert for La Palma and Tenerife due to expected heavy rainfall from early Sunday. The decision follows advice from the State Meteorological Agency and is part of the specific emergency plan for adverse weather events.
The alert will affect the western slopes and mountain regions of La Palma, as well as the metropolitan area of Tenerife. Meanwhile, the islands of El Hierro, La Gomera, and the rest of La Palma and Tenerife will remain on pre-alert status, and Gran Canaria will also be under pre-alert.
On Sunday, heavy rainfall is forecast, with some areas potentially receiving over 30mm per hour, especially in La Palma’s peaks and Tenerife’s metropolitan area. Elsewhere in La Palma, Tenerife, El Hierro, La Gomera, and Gran Canaria, rain may reach or exceed 15mm per hour, with sporadic showers expected.
The unsettled weather is expected to continue into Monday, affecting all four western islands, with similar rainfall amounts possible. There is little expectation of significant weather impacts on Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, although Gran Canaria may see some effects on Sunday.
The situation remains uncertain regarding the timing and intensity of the rainfall, so authorities will continue to monitor and update the public as necessary.
