The Yaiza community has kicked off the Virgen de Los Remedios festivities with a celebration that blends music, tradition, and local pride, led by the renowned Rancho de Pascuas. The group’s spokesperson, Teresa Gutiérrez, emphasised their mission to keep the spirit of Lanzarote’s festive Christmas traditions alive during the event held in the Plaza de Los Remedios.
Formed 55 years ago, the Rancho de Pascuas has not only played a significant role in Yaiza’s musical landscape but has also preserved one of the most cherished cultural traditions in the Canary Islands. The current ensemble includes 25 members, two of whom, Pedro Santana and ‘Perico’ Cabrera, have been with the group since its inception in 1971. Their stories reflect the group’s impact on the community, reinforcing the memories and teachings passed down through generations.
Yaiza’s mayor, Óscar Noda, highlighted the group’s importance, stating that the Rancho embodies the festive spirit of Christmas while symbolising the unity and strength of the local community. He noted that their music fosters a sense of belonging among residents.
The event featured emotional recollections of the group’s early days and highlighted the challenges they faced, including the loss of member Jaime Cedrés Feo in a tragic accident. This hardship, however, was met with resilience, as the Rancho regained its momentum in 1979, bringing together new voices and instruments while remaining committed to local heritage.
As the evening unfolded, nostalgic anecdotes filled the air, from memorable performances to amusing moments that have defined the group’s journey. Members shared stories of camaraderie, laughter, and the love that blossomed within the group, underscoring their strong bonds.
The opening night of the celebrations was described as a journey into the past, allowing attendees to reflect on their identity and the community’s rich history. The Rancho de Pascuas expressed gratitude to those who have kept the festive traditions alive and acknowledged the younger generation for ensuring their continuation.
Yaiza’s councillor for festivities, Daniel Medina, praised the Rancho for their engagement in the celebrations and underscored the collaborative effort that brings these beloved events to life. The local government also recognised the contributions of municipal staff and community organisations, emphasising the collective effort to make the fiestas a success.
