La Laguna Wins National Award for Disability Integration
La Laguna, Tenerife, has been honoured with the prestigious ‘Reina Letizia National Disability Award’ from the Ministry of Social Rights, recognising its exceptional efforts in integrating people with disabilities. The award announcement was revealed in the Official State Gazette on Tuesday.
Mayor Luis Yeray Gutiérrez celebrated the accolade as a victory for the entire community, stating, “We have worked for many years to ensure full integration for people with disabilities in mobility, intellectual pursuits, and civic participation. This requires the involvement of all citizens.”
He acknowledged the hard work of the Social Welfare team, led by councillor María Cruz, and local organisations dedicated to promoting inclusion. Gutiérrez added that the award illustrates that cultural heritage can coexist with universal accessibility.
The jury praised La Laguna for its commitment to making the city—recognised as a World Heritage site—accessible in public spaces, transport, and civic events, ensuring inclusivity while safeguarding its historical assets.
María Cruz highlighted the city’s dedication to universal accessibility through participatory approaches in urban planning, public buildings, transport, technology, and cultural activities, ensuring that all citizens can enjoy community services.
The Social Welfare strategy promotes active engagement with disability organisations, supporting a council that amplifies the voices and concerns of local residents with disabilities.
The awards ceremony will take place on December 3rd, coinciding with the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. Established over 40 years ago, these awards recognise individuals and organisations that contribute to human rights, violence prevention against women with disabilities, and fostering inclusive culture and accessibility.
In this edition, 71.4% of the jury consisted of experts with disabilities. Out of 127 applications, five awards and two special mentions were granted across five categories. The Reina Letizia Award adds to La Laguna’s growing list of national and international accolades in the field of social inclusion.
