The Port Authority reported a spillage of 20 litres of diesel at the Port of La Luz in Las Palmas on Sunday, prompting an immediate response to activate the facility’s self-protection plan and the Maritime Internal Plan (PIM) in alert phase. The affected area has been cordoned off.
By Monday at 1 pm, the General Directorate of Emergencies for the Canary Islands declared a pre-alert for marine pollution in Gran Canaria, based on available information and in accordance with the territory’s Civil Protection Emergency Plan (PLATECA).
The emergency services received the alert at 1.09 pm on Sunday from the Port Authority. In response, the facility implemented its self-protection measures and deployed barriers along the perimeter of the spill along with absorbent devices.
By 9.30 am on Monday, the PIM was escalated to emergency phase 1 due to difficulties in controlling the fuel spill, prompting a request for additional resources from the responsible company.
Additionally, the Maritime Captaincy confirmed that the National Maritime Plan had been activated in alert phase since Sunday at 1.30 pm. Consequently, the Directorate activated the PLATECA in pre-alert status to ensure coordination between agencies and to make necessary resources available for effective monitoring of the situation.
