Government Invests £3 Million in Canary Islands Film Industry
The Canary Islands government has announced nearly €3 million in funding to support local cinema. Migdalia Machín, the Minister for Universities, Science, Innovation, and Culture, signed the orders to approve the new grants aimed at boosting film production in the region.
The funds will support the production and co-production of feature films, as well as shorts, documentaries, and animation. They will also help with scriptwriting and the organisation of small to medium-scale events.
Proposals can be submitted after the bases are published in the Official Bulletin of the Canary Islands (BOC), expected shortly. Interested parties can view the guidelines beforehand on the government’s cultural website.
Machín emphasised that these grants reflect a strong commitment to nurturing local audiovisual talent and promoting projects rooted in the Canary Islands’ identity, which have gained international recognition.
The funding details include €1.28 million for production, €1 million for minority co-productions, and €520,000 for short films. Additionally, €125,000 will be allocated for scriptwriting, €150,000 for audiovisual events, and €262,625 for cinema venues.
All applications must be submitted electronically. The grants operate on a multi-year basis and are part of the Canary Islands Audiovisual Strategy, involving various regional government departments.
Execution periods will be four years for production and minority co-productions (until 1 November 2029) and three years for short film projects (until 2028). Only registered audiovisual companies and cinemas can apply, with minimum operational requirements depending on the type of project.
Key aspects of the projects will be evaluated by external committees made up of recognised industry professionals, ensuring a broad representation of the audiovisual landscape.
Applications for all grants will be open for twenty business days following publication, while those for small to medium events will have a fifteen-day window.
