Cabildo Affirms Commitment to LGBTIQA+ Rights
The Cabildo de Tenerife has reaffirmed its dedication to LGBTIQA+ rights during an event commemorating World LGBTIQA+ Pride Day. This act was marked by the reading of a manifesto promoting equality and diversity on the island.
President Rosa Dávila, alongside representatives from various organisations, emphasised that the Cabildo will strive for a more inclusive and respectful Tenerife. “The rainbow flag flying here isn’t just a symbol; it embodies our values. Tenerife is an open and proud island,” she stated.
Dávila highlighted the Cabildo’s role as a protector of LGBTIQA+ rights, asserting, “We will not take a step back against any attempts to undermine these rights.” This year, the island introduced its first strategic framework for LGBTIQA+ diversity, which outlines a comprehensive approach to fighting discrimination.
Patricia León, the Director of Equality and Diversity, reiterated the Cabildo’s commitment to human rights, asserting that their mission is to ensure a diverse, respectful, and free Tenerife. “We will make no concessions to anyone attempting to roll back human rights,” she insisted.
As part of the Pride celebrations, the Cabildo and La Orotava Council will host the Festivalullo on June 27, themed “Diverse Pride, Shared Voices.” The event will feature live performances and is free to the public, with facilities available for audience accessibility.
Both the Cabildo and participating organisations encouraged everyone to join the first LGBTIQA+ Pride march in La Orotava on June 28, commencing at the Parque Cultural Doña Chana at 6 PM, culminating in the Town Hall Square with a reading of the manifesto from the collective organisers.
