On Friday, 2 October 2026, Puerto del Carmen became the focal point for discussions on the future of employment in the tourism industry at the event “Tourism and Employment: Reinventing to Survive.”

The forum, held in the busy El Fondeadero hall, attracted a significant audience and featured high-quality reflections on critical issues facing hotels, restaurants, and service providers in the Canary Islands amid changing workplace dynamics.

As part of the celebrations marking the 60th anniversary of Puerto del Carmen as a pioneering tourist destination, the event tackled pressing challenges affecting local businesses. Keynote speaker Javier Ondarra, a corporate trainer, presented strategic tools and ideas to tackle absenteeism and enhance team engagement in the modern workplace.

Eugenia Soriano, a recruitment expert and headhunter, provided an insightful analysis of the job market in the Canaries. She shared effective strategies for attracting and retaining talent and guiding new professional paths in the tourism sector.

Sonia Martínez Alcalá, president of GEHOCAN and HR director at local hotels, discussed how to transform hotel environments into more appealing workplaces, emphasising that employees now hold the power to choose where they work.

The event also included a roundtable focusing on the impact of artificial intelligence and algorithms on recruitment processes and future career development.

Co-organised by the Tías City Council and Lanzarote Media, the forum was sponsored by the Centres of Art, Culture, and Tourism of Lanzarote and collaborated with GEHOCAN, the leading HR management association in the Canaries.
