Residents of Titerroy, represented by their Community Association, have expressed deep frustration over the ongoing lack of action regarding families evicted from their homes since 2009. On 22 September 2026, the Association formally called for a meeting with local authorities and political representatives in Arrecife. When no responses were received, a second invitation was sent on 30 September.

The meeting took place on 9 October 2026 at the Association’s headquarters to discuss the plight of families that have been displaced for 17 years, seek explanations from officials, and inquire about potential solutions. However, only one opposition political party attended, while representatives from the Arrecife council, the Canary Islands government, and the Public Defender’s office were absent.

This absence has left affected families feeling angry and disappointed, leading them to question the commitment of institutions meant to support citizens. They see the situation as a grave lack of respect and consideration after years of waiting for responses and solutions.

During the meeting, an opposition councillor contacted the deputy mayor, who claimed he was unaware of the meeting’s existence. This revelation raised concerns, especially given that the invitation had been issued formally twice.

The residents particularly lamented the lack of representation from the Public Defender’s office, which is supposed to protect citizens’ rights against public administration failures. They had hoped for support and mediation from this institution and are now specifically requesting that the Public Defender, María Dolores Padrón Rodríguez, meet with the affected families to offer clear explanations regarding actions taken by her office.

Seventeen years of uncertainty have led to significant personal struggles for these families, some of whom have passed away without returning home. The Association insists that this should compel authorities to act with urgency and sensitivity.

In light of the unfulfilled needs and the events at the recent meeting, residents are considering further legal and administrative actions. They are maintaining a willingness to engage in dialogue but stress that after nearly two decades, it is critical that institutional responses shift from intentions to actionable commitments.

The Community Association has requested, in writing, responses from the Arrecife Town Hall, the Canary Islands government, and the Public Defender regarding the lack of official representation and the communication failures that have contributed to this issue.

They additionally seek clarification on the meetings and actions taken thus far, including the people and departments involved. Finally, they remind public officials that behind every case are real lives and homes waiting to be addressed.

The Association ends with a plea for transparency and accountability, stating that 17 years of waiting is far too long, and the silence must end.
