Eight families in Gran Canaria are facing eviction on 11 November, coinciding with a nationwide general strike advocating for the right to housing. The affected families, some with young children and individuals with disabilities, live in El Carrizal de Ingenio and will be left without homes to participate in the protest.

These families have resided in their homes for years and currently lack alternative accommodation. According to the housing group ‘Derecho al Techo’, social reports that could aid in halting the eviction were not requested despite their vulnerable circumstances.

The group also highlights that the eviction is being initiated by XiZdecor, a substantial property holding company. They express particular concern for the children who are currently in school and their families, who are well-integrated into the community and have built social and educational ties.

The activists insist that no eviction should take place until vulnerability reports are obtained and a suitable living alternative is guaranteed for all affected individuals. They are also preparing support for the families on the day of the eviction, in case the ‘Maricarmen’ decree is not applied due to their vulnerable status and lack of housing alternatives.
