The Fuerteventura branch of the PSOE plans to introduce a specific Canary Islands law for rural municipalities with populations of up to 20,000. This mid-term initiative aims to provide legal recognition to less populated areas within the islands.

José Cabrera, the PSOE’s secretary for Municipal Policy in Fuerteventura, argues that existing regulations primarily for tourist municipalities and large urban centres have left smaller regions without their own legal framework. He stated, “The specific legal treatment required for areas affected by tourism or high population density has consequently left other territories in a legal vacuum.”

Drawing inspiration from Catalonia’s Law 8/2025, which addresses depopulation and aims to secure public services and improve funding in rural areas, the PSOE intends to tailor these measures for Canarian realities. This includes assessing the impact of public policies on rural life, dedicated funding, and housing measures, applicable to areas like La Oliva, Puerto del Rosario, Antigua, Pájara, and Betancuria.

Cabrera emphasised the need for a specific Rural Municipalities Act for the Canaries to help rebalance the territory and meet the needs of interior populations.
