VOX Demands Senate Control in Canarias Amid Negotiations with PP
Negotiations between the Popular Party (PP) and VOX have intensified, with just 36 hours left to submit candidacies for Spain’s general elections on 29 November. The deadline for nominations is 23:59 this Monday.
For over a week, VOX and the PP have been discussing ways to gain control of the Senate from a right-wing perspective, aiming to influence the renewal of the Constitutional Tribunal.
As part of these negotiations, the Senate candidacy in Fuerteventura has been a focal point, alongside La Palma and Tenerife, where VOX was expected to abstain from running in order to aid the PP’s chances.
However, VOX has issued a strong demand: they will not stand in 42 provinces as previously agreed unless the PP cedes control of the Senate in the Canary Islands. They are seeking one senator each from Fuerteventura, La Palma, La Gomera, El Hierro, and Lanzarote, and two from Gran Canaria and Tenerife, totaling nine senators, according to The Objective.
Another potential aspect of the negotiations could involve senators from Valencia, a region of significant interest to VOX.
In the last legislature, the PP had only one senator from Catalonia (appointed locally) and three from the Canary Islands (two elected directly and one appointed), meaning a single-list proposal would not significantly reduce their representation in these areas.
