The second day of the XXXV Canary Islands Traditional Sailing Boat Championship took place on Sunday morning in Puerto del Rosario, Fuerteventura. The Di Napoli – Isidoro and Manuela II, helmed by José Pascual Perdomo, won the first race of the day, further solidifying its lead in the overall standings. The Tritón, skippered by Alberto Morales, took first place in the second race.
Improved wind and sea conditions, with winds of 11 knots, made for an exciting day of racing on the bay. This prompted some teams to change sails, making strategy crucial for navigation.
As in the opening day, Di Napoli – Isidoro and Manuela II took the lead from the start and dictated the pace of the fleet. Playa Blanca, helmed by Virginia Morales, was in second position, but there was fierce competition for this spot during the upwind and downwind legs.
In the first race, Di Napoli – Isidoro and Manuela II secured victory, which reinforced its position at the top of the overall championship standings. Alfredo Morales’s Jameos del Agua narrowly clinched second place from Playa Blanca at the finish line, while Tritón and Romerito rounded out the top five.
In the second race, some participants opted to go ashore for sail changes or crew swaps between heats. All 31 boats took the start, although Fayna and Graciplus did not finish due to technical issues.
The Federico Pescamar Titerroy, led by Santiago González, was initially in the lead of the second race, rounding the first marks as the leader. However, Guillermo López’s Ciudad Alta, who was in second place, was unable to finish after capsizing.
Tritón seized the lead from Federico Pescamar Titerroy in the final stretch, ultimately winning the race. Federico Pescamar finished second, followed by Playa Blanca. Manri Rodríguez’s Biosfera Express took fourth place, with Di Napoli – Isidoro and Manuela II coming fifth.
Currently, the championship standings are led by Di Napoli – Isidoro and Manuela II with 8 points, followed by Playa Blanca with a 4-point gap and Tritón with 6 points. Playa Dorada (23 points) and Bernasan (26 points) occupy the next two positions.
The championship will resume next weekend with the last four races. The competition begins on Saturday, October 31, at 12:00 in Puerto del Rosario, with the final racing day on Sunday, November 1, featuring live coverage from Televisión Canaria.
