Unidos por Lanzarote has accused Juan Monzón, a non-elected councillor for the Popular Party, of an extravagant misuse of public resources during his recent ten-day trip to Hawaii.
Laureano Álvarez, the group’s spokesman, has called for transparency regarding the expenses incurred during Monzón’s holiday, including flights, accommodation, and daily allowances. “The question now is how much these holidays cost the citizens,” Álvarez stated. He announced plans to submit a series of inquiries to the Cabildo of Lanzarote demanding a full disclosure of costs related to Monzón’s time in the Pacific.
Álvarez highlighted that Monzón was not elected by the public but appointed by his party with the approval of the Cabildo president. “Public officials should not treat governmental institutions as their personal travel agencies. The Cabildo’s money belongs to the public – they have the right to know how it’s spent, and we expect responsible spending,” he said.
Furthermore, Monzón stands to receive travel allowances for his trip, meaning he not only has not paid for his journey but may also profit from it financially. During this time, he was expected to fulfill his duties at the Cabildo, making his vacation in Hawaii an example of political impropriety, according to Álvarez.
He also remarked on Monzón’s unusual silence on social media during his trip, stating, “It’s curious that Monzón hasn’t posted a single video in the last ten days, despite typically using his media presence to promote himself.”
Unidos por Lanzarote is demanding that Monzón reimburse the expenses from his vacation, decline any allowances, and is urging the Cabildo president to suspend him from his duties. The group expressed outrage at the contrast between Monzón’s funded holiday and the housing struggles facing many residents of Lanzarote.
