Esther Hernández Marrero, the Popular Party candidate for the Senate in Fuerteventura, has pledged to champion tax incentives and tax reductions for building and self-building homes if elected. She believes these measures are crucial to addressing the housing emergency facing families.
In a statement, Hernández emphasised that housing has become the foremost social and economic issue for many. To counteract the shortage of housing and market pressures, she advocates for a combination of fiscal incentives, the mobilization of public land, and streamlined administrative procedures.
She also mentioned the proposal by Alberto Núñez Feijóo, the leader of the Popular Party and candidate for Spanish Prime Minister, to construct one million new homes nationwide. Hernández believes this collaboration among public administrations could provide a realistic solution to the housing crisis that the current PSOE government has failed to resolve in the past eight years.
Hernández called for urgent action to assist young people and families with average or low incomes in finding homes. She accused Pedro Sánchez’s government of creating legal insecurity and chaos in housing policy, pointing to the 2023 Housing Law, which she claims has removed thousands of properties from the traditional rental market, making access even more difficult for less affluent families.
Hernández reiterated the Popular Party’s commitment to supporting the most vulnerable groups and ensuring access to affordable housing, stating she would work in the Senate to advocate for fiscal and management measures that would increase housing availability in response to public demand.
