Inés Cuartero, an anti-abortion activist, has been appointed as the “technical assistant” for the far-right Vox party in the Spanish Congress, starting in November 2024. Cuartero will run for a parliamentary seat in Las Palmas, positioning herself behind Alberto Rodríguez Almeida on the party’s list. She earns an annual salary of €55,612 and has spent seven years working for Vox.
Her role within the party has largely been technical, although she previously ran as a candidate in the 2023 elections, appearing in ninth place on the list headed by party leader Santiago Abascal. Her nomination surprised many, as it was initially expected that Montserrat Lluis, an ally of Vox leader in Castilla y León, would take that slot. Instead, Cuartero, who was primarily involved in advisory work for the Vox parliamentary group, secured the position.
Details about her are limited, but her LinkedIn profile indicates she holds a postgraduate qualification in Public Affairs Management and is a well-known opponent of abortion.
Due to a legal requirement for electoral lists to alternate genders and the scarcity of women in Vox’s Las Palmas representation, the party sought a candidate from outside the province for this role. Given that Vox won a seat in this constituency in 2023 and most surveys suggest it will gain more support, Cuartero has a strong chance of becoming a parliamentary representative for Las Palmas.
