Arrecife’s Mayor, Yonathan de León, spoke out on Friday about internal strife within the Lanzarote branch of the People’s Party (PP), claiming there are elements intent on undermining the party. The remarks came during an interview on Crónicas Radio’s “A Buena Hora” programme, which followed a tumultuous week for the PP marked by leaks and the departure of its president, Astrid Pérez.
De León accused certain individuals within the PP of wanting to destabilise the party for some time. He stated that Pérez had informed them a year ago of her decision not to run again, opening the path for new leadership. He expressed gratitude for her 18 years of service and emphasised the need for unity as they prepare for the 2027 elections.
He also addressed the recent speculation regarding José Valle potentially taking the lead, alleging that someone leaked his name with malicious intent. While Valle’s experience as president of the Chamber of Commerce makes him a strong candidate, the mayor voiced frustration over ongoing leaks that undermine the party.
The conversation turned to sensitive issues surrounding immigration. De León voiced his concerns about the high number of arrivals to Lanzarote, asserting that the island cannot become like Ceuta, which has seen a surge in population due to migration. He called for a stronger response from the Spanish government, criticising the current administration for only providing security during the Prime Minister’s holidays.
He highlighted that from January to September, around 5,000 migrants came to the Canary Islands, the equivalent of the population of Tinajo. De León urged that the Spanish government needs a firmer approach to border control and suggested returning boats carrying migrants to Morocco, criticising the Moroccan government for its inability to manage its own borders despite its spending on other areas, such as hosting a World Cup event.
On the local front, the Mayor discussed plans for an upcoming municipal meeting about a long-delayed planning document crucial for development and property security in Arrecife.
He ended with remarks on recent controversies surrounding the closure of Reducto Beach due to water quality issues, dismissing blame from opposition parties and reiterating the need for improvements in the island’s sanitation systems. De León expressed confidence that future measures would restore beach services and improve Arrecife’s amenities.
