Salvamento Marítimo escorted a cayuco carrying 131 migrants to La Restinga in El Hierro early this morning after it was spotted south of the island. Tragically, three individuals were confirmed dead, while six others required hospital treatment.

The situation unfolded when reports of the irregular vessel prompted the Tenerife Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre to dispatch the Salvamar Diphda, which guided the cayuco safely to port.

Upon arrival, medical teams provided assistance to all 131 migrants, including 25 women and 8 minors. The Canary Islands’ Emergency and Security Coordination Centre confirmed the three fatalities and the hospital transfers.
