Tenerife Tourism Launches Ninth Sustainable Practices Competition to Highlight Eco-Friendly Initiatives
Tenerife’s local government has initiated the ninth edition of the Sustainable Tourism Practices Competition, aimed at recognising and promoting eco-friendly efforts by businesses, local administrations, and non-profit organisations in the tourism sector.
Open until 31 January 2027, this competition seeks innovative projects that contribute to a more responsible tourism model, addressing environmental, social, and economic sustainability. Since its inception in 2017, the competition has received 208 submissions and awarded 49 projects.
Lope Afonso, the Vice President and Tourism Councillor of the Cabildo de Tenerife, emphasised the need for collaboration between public authorities, businesses, and society to enhance sustainable tourism practices. “This competition allows us to honour those already implementing good practices, proving that tourism competitiveness can align with territorial protection and local well-being,” he said.
Afonso noted that Tenerife boasts companies driving innovative solutions across various areas, including energy efficiency, circular economy, water management, and biodiversity conservation. Promoting these initiatives is essential for fostering knowledge and encouraging similar practices among other organisations.
Dimple Melwani, CEO of Tenerife Tourism, added that “sustainability is built on concrete, measurable actions that create a positive impact on our destination. We want to showcase the projects underway and inspire the wider tourism sector.” She highlighted that innovation, resource efficiency, and local community involvement are key to advancing a balanced and responsible tourism model.
The competition offers eight categories: sustainable gastronomy, waste reduction and circular economy, technology for sustainability, energy efficiency and renewable energies, sustainable water management, education on sustainability, sustainable events management, and habitat restoration.
These categories aim to honour initiatives that mitigate tourism’s environmental impact, optimise resource use, encourage responsible practices, and foster social and economic benefits. A specialised jury will assess each entry based on sustainability, innovation, implementation, and overall impact.
Since its launch, the competition has established itself as a key initiative promoting sustainable practices within Tenerife’s tourism sector, reflecting the growing commitment of local businesses to integrate sustainability into operations and share best practices.
To participate, businesses, freelancers, local administrations, associations, educational institutions, and other entities can submit projects related to tourism in Tenerife. Initiatives must be either executed or underway, with evidence provided to demonstrate implementation and impact.
Eligible organisations can register using the form provided by Tenerife Tourism, including necessary documentation such as photographs, graphs, and optional two to three-minute explanatory videos. The submission period runs from 1 October 2026 to 31 January 2027.

Through this competition, Tenerife’s government and tourism authorities encourage local stakeholders to share their experiences, promoting a destination that balances exceptional tourism with safeguarding natural and cultural heritage, supporting local communities, and fostering sustainable development.
