The main beach at Playa Jardín in Puerto de la Cruz has been closed again due to positive tests for faecal contamination in the water. This marks the third closure in a month, with previous closures occurring in August and early September.
The local council announced the closure, citing compliance with public health directives aimed at safeguarding residents’ health. However, they highlighted discrepancies between the results from the local health authority and those from an independent laboratory hired by the council. The independent lab’s results from samples taken on 28 September showed no violations of the established safety limits.
In light of these conflicting results, the council has requested a technical explanation from public health officials. They aim to clear up the differences, given that the water samples were collected just an hour apart. In the meantime, the council is continuing its cleaning efforts, conducting preventive maintenance on the sewage system, and carrying out regular analyses through independent checks to enhance the safety of the sewage network and protect the coastline.
