The Ayuntamiento de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria held an event titled “De patas por Vegueta” this Sunday, focusing on animal welfare and the importance of pet adoption. The initiative took place in Plaza de Santo Domingo as part of the Fiestas del Rosario celebrations.
The event featured an animal runway, children’s activities, and information booths from various animal protection organisations. Mayor Carolina Darias, alongside Social Welfare, Care and Health Councillor Carmen Luz Vargas, and Councillor for the Vegueta, Cono Sur, and Tafira District, Nina Santana, attended the occasion, where professionals from the Ayuntamiento provided guidance on responsible pet ownership and adoption options for dogs and cats in municipal facilities. Attendees could also access a virtual catalogue of animals available for adoption via the municipal website.
Darias described the event as a fantastic opportunity to promote animal welfare and the bond between people and their pets. She highlighted that animals bring significant joy to our lives, stressing the importance of responsible ownership and the need to prevent pet abandonment.
The municipal stand offered distribution of water bowls, bags, and waste disposal dispensers, all aimed at encouraging responsible pet care in public spaces.
Additionally, the Ayuntamiento operates a WhatsApp channel to disseminate information about pets in need of homes, facilitating their adoption. From January to September 2023, 140 adoptions were recorded at municipal facilities, including 75 cats and 65 dogs.
