The Council of Puerto de la Cruz and Aqualia will commence emergency works on Tuesday, 29 September, to replace a section of the Punta Brava sewage collector. This section, located along the coastline, has deteriorated due to prolonged exposure to the marine environment. The local authority announced that parking restrictions will be enforced to facilitate machinery movement during the construction.
The project aims to proactively renew a segment of the sewage network that has reached the end of its service life, thereby reducing the risk of leaks and spills while enhancing environmental protection along the coast.
Parking will be restricted on Ruimán Street from 6.00 AM on 29 September until 4.00 PM on 1 October. Additionally, parking will be prohibited in Manuel Ballesteros Square from 6.00 PM on 29 September until 4.00 PM on 30 September to ensure safe access for tankers providing support during the works.
Alonso Acevedo, the councillor for General Services, stated that the upgrade involves replacing a 300-millimetre cast-iron pipeline located above ground between two structural pillars near the sea. The permanent marine exposure has caused significant corrosion, necessitating its replacement.
The repairs will be conducted manually using certified scaffolding, protected by high-density textile nets to prevent material from falling into the ocean. A hydraulic bypass protocol will be activated, with tanker support at the El Caletón Wastewater Pumping Station.
The council has urged residents and drivers to adhere to the temporary no-parking signs that will be placed in the area. They also stressed that the hydraulic work will depend on weather conditions, specifically the absence of strong winds and rain.
Once the new pipeline is installed, further tasks, such as concrete finishes and replacing inspection covers, will proceed without affecting the network’s functionality. Pedro Antonio Campos, the councillor for Administrative Concessions, noted that the intervention has been coordinated with Aqualia to ensure technical and environmental standards are met while minimising disruption to the sewage system’s operations.
