Fernando Clavijo has been unanimously nominated as the Coalition Canaria’s candidate for the presidency of the Canary Islands in the upcoming regional elections scheduled for May 2027. The announcement was made during the party’s National Political Council meeting on Saturday.
Clavijo expressed gratitude for the trust placed in him and urged party members to approach the coming months with unity and commitment to priority issues for the Canary Islands, regardless of the national political landscape. He stated, “Above our party labels is the Canary Islands, wherever we may be,” highlighting the party’s dedication to the region throughout its time in opposition and now in government.
The candidate emphasised the importance of grassroots political projects and reaffirmed the party’s commitment to defending the interests of the archipelago. He addressed national political developments, asserting that Coalition Canaria will focus on local issues rather than becoming embroiled in national disputes. “While others might fight, we talk about the Canary Islands. We feel for our land,” he said.
Clavijo identified several key challenges for the region over the next few years, including housing, population growth, the forthcoming European financial framework, and discussions on the islands’ development model. “We will tackle these with honesty, unity, transparency, and commitment, not out of fear but from our convictions and the defence of our identity,” he asserted.
During the meeting, the importance of unity within Canary nationalism was a central topic. Territorial representatives voiced their support for Clavijo’s candidacy and stressed the need for enhanced cooperation between the islands ahead of the 2027 elections.
Pedro San Ginés, the party’s secretary on Lanzarote, praised Clavijo’s ability to unite the diverse realities of the islands “with humility, respect, and honesty.” Clavijo concluded by reaffirming that Coalition Canaria will maintain its priorities irrespective of developments in national politics, stating, “Whatever happens in Madrid, we know what we need to do.”
