Members of the Fuerteventura Municipal Assemblies (AMF) Executive have filed internal appeals against the party’s decision to back Juan Nicolás Cabrera Saavedra’s candidacy for the Cabildo de Fuerteventura under the electoral alliance “Por Fuerteventura.” Each member submitted their appeal individually, citing identical concerns.
The appeals request documentation confirming which AMF body approved Cabrera’s candidacy, the processes involved, and the statutory backing for the decision. They seek access to meeting minutes, voting records, and other relevant documents to verify the decision-making process.
According to the appeals, during a vote within the Executive, Cabrera Peña received nine votes while Cabrera Saavedra secured seven. The appellants argue that the resignation of the selected candidate does not automatically promote the runner-up and demand to see any rules or agreements that might justify such a substitution.
While the appeals do not deny the existence of internal agreements, they insist on reviewing them for validity. They urge that if there is no sufficient organisational backing for Cabrera Saavedra, the internal decision favouring him should be annulled, and a new decision reached through proper channels should be initiated.
The appellants also request the president refrain from participating in the deliberation of these appeals, as this directly affects his candidacy and he heads the Direction Committee, which acts as the Conflict Resolution Committee.
As a precautionary measure, they seek to temporarily halt the execution of the contested decision and any related formalisation acts dependent solely on AMF. They request that these appeals be communicated to the coalition and that the candidacy remains unresolved until the dispute is settled. This suspension is explicitly asked for and not seen as an automatic consequence of the appeals.
Additionally, over a third of the Executive members have called for an extraordinary meeting before 20:00 on Wednesday, 28 October. An extraordinary meeting was already held on 23 October, during which the president discussed his candidacy, its non-recognition, the choice of a new candidate, and his removal as AMF spokesperson for “Por Fuerteventura.”
The signatories explain their requirement aims to reinforce the legal security of their actions. They warn that if the president fails to hold the requested meeting within the stipulated time, the decisions made during the 23 October meeting will hold full legal force.
The promoters of these initiatives reaffirm their intent to remain with AMF and reject claims made by the president in the media that their actions indicate a desire to leave the party.
“We will not abandon AMF. We are exercising internal channels of participation and challenge to defend our rights and the democratic functioning of the party. The legitimate exercise of our constitutionally protected rights cannot be grounds for our expulsion,” they state.
They also express gratitude to affiliates and supporters who have reached out during this period for their backing, committing to ensuring that party decisions are made with participation, transparency, and due guarantees.
