Amaia Montero received an emotional surprise during a concert in Gran Canaria as her bandmates from La Oreja de Van Gogh took a moment to honour her return, 20 years after she first left the group. Musician Xabi San Martín praised her, stating, “The world owes her a big round of applause,” referring to the challenging days leading up to their first concert back together.
Montero expressed her shock at the affectionate gesture, saying, “That’s what true love is about, it surprises you. They take care of me and help me every day because they are incredible companions. They are my friends and my brothers. I wasn’t expecting this; I found myself with the microphone taken away and wondered, ‘What’s happening?'”
As she received a standing ovation, Montero added, “I definitely needed that kiss,” while fans chanted her name and the familiar “pío, pío” echoing throughout the stadium.
La Oreja de Van Gogh’s return to the Canaries marked their first performance in the archipelago in two decades. They held two concerts this weekend: the first on Friday 23 October at Gran Canaria Stadium in Las Palmas and another on Saturday 24 October at the Adeje Football Field in Tenerife.
Their “Tantas cosas que contar Tour 2026” celebrates three decades of music and marks a new chapter with Montero back at the helm. Her return as lead vocalist has generated significant excitement among long-time fans and new listeners alike.
The concert showcased hit songs from their extensive catalogue, including “Cuídate,” “La playa,” “Puedes contar conmigo,” “Rosas,” and “20 de enero.”
