Activist groups in Arrecife, Lanzarote, have gathered in the José Ramírez Cerdá Park to demand government action on the housing crisis affecting many residents. Podemos Lanzarote, Lanzarote En Pie, Izquierda Unida, and Movimiento Sumar Canarias voiced their solidarity with the protesters, highlighting the urgent need for affordable housing options on the island.
The organisations emphasised that access to adequate housing is a fundamental necessity and a constitutional right. Many residents struggle to find homes that fit their financial circumstances, which impacts their stability and future plans.
They stressed the importance of listening to the demonstrators and responding to their concerns. Peaceful protest and civic engagement are vital in a democratic society, and it is crucial for public institutions to address these pressing issues.
The groups also condemned the Arrecife City Council’s approach to public assembly, arguing that it undermines democratic principles. They called for an end to what they described as harassment of legitimate citizens’ protests advocating for social rights.
The coalition believes that tackling the housing issue should be a top priority for local authorities. They called for open dialogue with those affected and for practical measures to ensure access to dignified, affordable housing.
In their statement, they also expressed their support for families in Valterra and Titerroy who continue to await solutions regarding their housing situations, which have lingered unresolved for years.
The right to housing, they concluded, is a collective responsibility that demands dialogue and institutional responses.
