Temperatures Set to Ease in the Canary Islands
As October approaches, signalling the transition to Christmas, the Canary Islands are finally experiencing a shift in weather, with cooler temperatures anticipated. This week, as September draws to a close, the archipelago will see increasing cloud cover and rain.
According to the European weather model (ECMWF), northeast winds will continue to blow, bringing cloudy fronts and scattered showers to the western islands and Gran Canaria, particularly in Tenerife and La Palma.
The Spanish Meteorological Agency (Aemet) forecasts the following for the coming days:
Thursday:
Cloudy skies in La Palma with a possibility of rain. Other mountainous areas will see cloudy intervals early and late in the day, with clearer conditions in the remainder. Some interior regions may experience occasional rainfall. Lanzarote and Fuerteventura will be mostly clear. Temperatures remain stable, with daytime highs reaching 30°C in lower areas, especially in the southern and eastern parts of the islands, with moderate northeast winds.
Friday:
Northerly mountainous regions will predominantly have cloudy skies with a low chance of light rain, while other areas will be generally clear. Temperatures will show little change, along with moderate northeast winds.
Saturday:
Cloudy intervals in the northern mountains will give way to clear skies during the day. The eastern islands may experience high-level dust. Temperatures will remain stable or slightly rise, with moderate northeast winds.
Looking ahead to the first week of October, the European weather model indicates little rain is expected over the weekend. However, precipitation is likely to return at the start of the week, with Tenerife predicted to receive the most rain, although all islands may see some rainfall.
Significantly, the western province will experience the heaviest downpours, particularly in the interior of Tenerife, which may also be accompanied by thunderstorms. Winds are expected to be generally light, coming from the northeast or east, with temperatures beginning to fall.
