Alberto Vázquez-Figueroa Awarded Tenerife’s Gran Distinción de Nivaria

The Tenerife Cabildo has honoured local writer, journalist, and inventor Alberto Vázquez-Figueroa Rial with its prestigious Gran Distinción de Nivaria, the highest civil recognition from the island’s governing body. This award acknowledges his remarkable career, which has had a significant impact both on and beyond the Canary Islands.

The decision followed a proposal initiated by the Cabildo on April 30. A special committee unanimously agreed that Vázquez-Figueroa’s impressive achievements warranted this honour.

Rosa Dávila, President of the Cabildo, praised Vázquez-Figueroa for bringing the name of Tenerife to a global audience through his literary and journalistic work. She noted that his dedication to addressing major societal challenges demonstrates the exceptional merit of his contributions.

Dávila continued, “This award is reserved for genuinely exceptional achievements, and his career more than meets this criterion. He has inspired millions of readers, witnessed significant historical events, and consistently used his voice to advocate for justice and environmental protection.”

Vázquez-Figueroa’s roots in Tenerife run deep, and despite his international acclaim, he remains closely tied to his home. Dávila stated that he is now part of the cultural heritage and collective memory of many generations.

An International Literary Career

Born in Santa Cruz de Tenerife on October 11, 1936, Vázquez-Figueroa is among the most widely read contemporary Spanish authors. He has published over a hundred books, translated into more than 30 languages, reaching nearly 25 million readers worldwide.

His life experiences, particularly his childhood in the Sahara and the Canary Islands, have influenced his adventurous and socially-conscious writing. Notable works include “Tuareg,” “Ébano,” “Manaos,” and “Piratas.”

Before becoming an acclaimed author, Vázquez-Figueroa had a notable career in journalism, covering wars in regions like Guinea and Chad. He was part of a significant generation of Spanish reporters associated with major media outlets such as TVE and La Vanguardia.

He also has a keen interest in sustainability and has developed natural pressure desalination techniques to address water scarcity.

Dávila highlighted that Vázquez-Figueroa represents curiosity and exploration and that this award aims to give back a fraction of what he has contributed to the culture and international standing of Tenerife.

Continuing a Legacy of Recognition

This award to Vázquez-Figueroa continues the legacy of the Gran Distinción de Nivaria, which was presented last year to painter Cristino de Vera for his artistic contributions to Canary Islands culture.

Both honourees embody the exceptional nature of this distinction, which aims to celebrate achievements that resonate beyond the islands and promote the values and culture of the Canaries both locally and globally.

The Gran Distinción de Nivaria remains the highest honour from the Cabildo of Tenerife, recognising exceptional contributions to society.
