The Cabildo of Fuerteventura has approved the removal of the overhead power line known as ‘Gran Playa,’ which crosses the Dunas de Corralejo Natural Park from east to west. This development follows a positive report from the Land Planning Service and marks a significant step towards eliminating this electricity network that runs through the protected area in La Oliva.

The current Natural Resources Management Plan for the park, which the Cabildo is currently revising, explicitly prohibits overhead lines in this protected site, part of the Natura 2000 network.

The report from the island authorities is crucial for ensuring that electric distribution company EDISTRIBUCIÓN Redes Digitales S.L.U. can carry out the dismantling. Conditions for the work include utilising existing roads and paths rather than creating new ones, to minimise environmental impact. Any disturbances caused will need to be restored.

Both the president of the Cabildo, Lola García, and the councillor for Land Planning, Nereida Calero, emphasised the need for actions that protect ecosystems in line with public interest, especially since such activities are currently banned in the area’s planning regulations.

The local authorities continue to develop the management plans for the natural parks of Corralejo, Jandía, Islote de Lobos, and the Betancuria Rural Park, which are vital for defining the protection and use of these spaces.
