Historic Alliance Unites Left-Wing Parties in Canary Islands for General Elections
In a significant political development, Podemos has formed an alliance with Nueva Canarias, Izquierda Unida, and Movimiento Sumar for the upcoming general elections in Las Palmas. This coalition, named Unidad del Pueblo Canario, is notable for being one of the first of its kind to be finalised in Spain, reflecting a strategic effort to unify left-wing forces against the threat of far-right politics.
Luis Campos, the coalition candidate for Las Palmas, expressed pride in leading this initiative, which culminated from a year of negotiations characterised by challenges that these parties managed to navigate through mutual concessions. Campos emphasised the urgency of this alliance, stating that “this is about potentially losing everything to the far-right, everything we have fought for over the past 40 years.”
He noted three key factors contributing to this unity: an understanding of the historical moment, responsiveness to public demands for cooperation, and the willingness of the participating parties to put aside their individual identities for the greater good. “When the left comes together, it wins,” Campos asserted.
Campos further highlighted the specific challenges facing the Canary Islands, including economic isolation and the rising cost of living, which necessitate a strong leftist response now more than ever. He reiterated that their goal is not just to block the far-right but also to inspire hope and present a clear alternative for the electorate.
As the election date of November 29 approaches, Campos is optimistic about achieving representation in both the Congress of Deputies and the Senate, aiming to create a voice for the majority social interests in the region. “This space has generated significant enthusiasm, bringing together various organisations, activists, and specialists”, he noted, exemplifying the wider support for the alliance.
The coalition also encompasses a commitment to defend essential social rights, including housing and social services, asserting that the voice of the Unidad del Pueblo Canario will represent the interests of the 95% of the population in the Canary Islands. Campos underscored the generational responsibility of his colleagues to heed the public’s call for unity and not to fail them in this critical moment.
As political tensions rise ahead of the elections, Campos’s coalition signifies a renewed effort to advocate for leftist values in the face of right-wing challenges, marking a pivotal shift in the region’s political landscape.
