The Tenerife Tour hotel, a symbol of Tenerife’s tourism boom in the 1970s, is set for demolition after remaining closed since 2011 and falling into disrepair. The municipal authorities have granted permission for the demolition, with work beginning this Tuesday. Security fencing has already been installed at the site, located along the Avenida Marítima and built in a stepped design in 1966.

In its place, new commercial spaces, including a Mercadona supermarket, residential properties, and recreational areas will be developed. The project aims to restore public access to the coastal area, featuring a plaza with resting spots, viewpoints, and a sun terrace, alongside extending the seafront promenade with public access to the coast. The urban landscape will greatly change as the existing built environment is replaced with pedestrian-friendly public spaces, following the contribution of 1,476 square metres by the developers to finance the works, which will include the removal of the old seaside pools.

This redevelopment is part of the Urban Environment Action Programme (PAMU). After this initial phase, the proposal will be submitted to the municipal council for final approval, paving the way for urbanisation plans. Candelaria Council has expressed that the initiative is “very positive,” highlighting the area’s potential revaluation, as it has been abandoned and unused.

In late September, the Urban Planning and Environmental Management department ordered the urgent demolition of the structure due to significant structural damage that posed a safety risk. The council’s resolution also mandates the property owner to install security fencing for vehicles and pedestrians, post no-parking signs, ensure that no residents return after recent evictions by the local police, and to rat-proof the site as a public health precaution.

Candelaria’s municipal technical office has been working in recent years to create the best possible plan that balances the interests of the private developers with the community’s desire to reclaim this part of the municipality for public use.
