Podemos Lanzarote, Lanzarote En Pie, Izquierda Unida, and Sumar Canarias have voiced their support for protestors in Arrecife campaigning for the right to decent housing.
The groups highlighted the significance of this public demonstration, which brings to light the pressing social issue of housing accessibility for many residents of Lanzarote. They emphasised that, despite housing being a basic need protected by the Constitution, many families struggle to find suitable accommodation that aligns with their financial situations.
The organisations called for attention to the concerns of those making their voices heard, asserting that peaceful protest is integral to democracy and a legitimate way to address public issues.
They have criticised the Arrecife City Council, led by the PP-CC coalition, for their stance on public gatherings, labelling it “unacceptable in a democratic society.” They demanded an end to the harassment of citizens peacefully advocating for social rights.
The organisations stressed that housing must be a top priority for relevant authorities and urged the need for dialogue with those affected. They specifically referenced families in Valterra and Titerroy, who have awaited solutions for their housing problems for many years.
