Emotional Gala of the Elderly Lanzarote 2026 Celebrates Nine Achievements

The Cabildo de Lanzarote held a heartfelt event on Friday, 2nd October, at the Casa Museo Monumento al Campesino, where the Gala of the Elderly Lanzarote 2026 was celebrated. The evening recognised the significant contributions of nine individuals and social projects, bringing families and local associations together in a moving tribute.

Among the awards, Antonio Pérez was named Elder of the Year, while the association ASOMAVO from Tías was honoured for its exceptional work. The Paseos Saludables programme was awarded for Best Active Project, and Trinidad García Hernández received recognition for her dedication as a caregiver. The Centro de Día Isla de los Volcanes also received accolades.

In additional highlights, Agustina María García of AFA Lanzarote was celebrated as a distinguished professional, and the project “Cuentos de los Abuelos Canarios” was acknowledged for fostering valuable intergenerational relationships. EMERLAN made strides in the Solidarity category, while the Charlemos programme received the award for inclusivity, providing remarkable support to many elderly individuals within the LGTBI+ community.

Oswaldo Betancort, president of the Cabildo, warmly congratulated all the laureates and emphasised the vital role of the elderly in society. He stated, “Our elders are not just our memory; they remain active participants in our current society, and their vast experience is our greatest human heritage.”

María Jesús Tovar, the vice-president, acknowledged the human component highlighted in these events and stated that by recognising these often-overlooked social stories, a better model of Canary society can be built. Nori Machín, the adviser, underscored the importance of ensuring that elderly voices are heard in future policies.

The night culminated with a musical performance by artist Ciro Corujo, wrapping up a dignified celebration of community engagement and experience on the island.
