The Lanzarote branch of the PSOE party has called for the dismissal of Ángel Vázquez, the managing director of the Centres for Art, Culture, and Tourism (CACT), following revelations that his son, Gabriel Vázquez Díaz, secured one of the fixed positions recently announced by the organisation.
According to the PSOE, the selection process began in January 2024 when the guidelines for 15 fixed positions of cleaner at the Tourist Centres were approved. On 12 November 2025, Vázquez signed off on the final resolution, which included his son’s name among the selected candidates.
The PSOE is demanding clarity from the Cabildo regarding the president, Oswaldo Betancort’s, knowledge of the situation. They want to know when he became aware of his colleague’s son’s application and what actions may be taken in response.
The socialists argue that the very guidelines of the procedure reference articles 23 and 24 of the Law 40/2015, concerning public sector legal regulation. These articles stipulate when public officials must refrain from participating in particular procedures, especially concerning family connections to interested parties.
Ariagona González, the PSOE’s deputy spokesperson at the Cabildo, has urged Betancort to act upon these developments and labelled Vázquez’s continuation in his role as “politically untenable.”
González has clarified that her party is not judging any potential legal implications but emphasised that the political responsibility lies with the Cabildo president.
The PSOE is pressing for further explanations on how the selection process was conducted and the extent of Vázquez’s involvement, particularly concerning the approval of the guidelines and the final resolution.
In light of the situation, the PSOE is reiterating its call for Vázquez’s dismissal and expects Betancort to address the procedure and outline any future actions in light of the news regarding the selected candidates.
