Investigation Launched into Wastewater Treatment Spill in Puerto de la Cruz
The Cabildo of Tenerife has announced it will file a complaint with judicial authorities regarding a spill at the Punta Brava Wastewater Treatment Plant in Puerto de la Cruz that occurred on Saturday night. The aim is to ensure a thorough investigation into the incident and establish accountability.
Officials are calling for a “rigorous investigation” to determine the cause of the spill, which involved a diluted iron chloride solution used in water treatment. Initial estimates suggest less than 1,000 litres were released. The investigation will cover how the rupture happened, the actions taken once the incident was detected, and the adherence to safety protocols.
The Cabildo is particularly focused on understanding the presence of unauthorized individuals within the facility during the incident. It has made clear that it will not accept any explanations unsupported by concrete evidence and technical reports.
In addition, the Insular Water Council (CIAT) has initiated an investigation into Aqualia, the operating company, to ascertain the precise circumstances of the spill and check compliance with safety and maintenance obligations.
The incident raises significant concerns as these hydraulic infrastructures are fundamental for Tenerife, and their reliability must not be compromised. The Cabildo insists that there should be no ambiguities regarding the operation of such facilities.
If the investigation reveals any failures in maintenance or safety protocols, the Cabildo will demand those responsible be held accountable. It also pledges to cooperate fully with law enforcement and judicial authorities, providing all necessary documentation to aid the investigation.
“The goal is clear: to ascertain exactly what happened, why it occurred, and ensure that such an incident does not happen again,” a spokesperson stated.
