Teguise’s Socialist Party (PSOE) has received unanimous backing from local councillors for its proposal to establish a tourist training centre, operated by Hoteles Escuela de Canarias (HECANSA), in Lanzarote.
The motion was supported by all 21 councillors at the recent municipal plenary, transforming it into a collective demand for the Canary Islands Government. PSOE believes Teguise’s historic heritage and tourism potential make it an ideal location for such a project, linking training with economic development.
“We have a significant opportunity for Teguise and Lanzarote,” said Jenifer Galán, the party’s spokesperson. “We need to focus on the future as well as day-to-day issues.” She highlighted that HECANSA already operates in Gran Canaria, Tenerife, and La Gomera, adapting its offerings to local needs.
The proposal aims to utilise Teguise’s architectural legacy for a training programme that will enhance conservation efforts while providing new uses for certain properties. Galán pointed to HECANSA’s successful projects, such as the Technological Centre Mila González Yanes and the Rural Hotel School Casa Los Herrera, which demonstrate the adaptability of training initiatives.
Founded in 1989, HECANSA has over three decades of experience in the Canary Islands, combining theoretical education with practical experience to support professional qualification and job placement.
The PSOE also stresses the importance of including Lanzarote in HECANSA’s expansion plans, recently mentioned by Jéssica de León, the Tourism Minister. They believe this initiative will enhance specialised training in a tourism-driven economy, while also exploring ways to integrate education with the preservation of Teguise’s historical resources.
With unanimous council support, the Teguise Town Hall will formally present the proposal to the Canary Islands Government. Galán urged the administration to heed this request and advance the project, reinforcing Teguise’s historical significance and its connection to tourism.
