Art can entertain, narrate history, and connect us with everyday experiences, including the complexities of Alzheimer’s disease. This debilitating condition not only impacts cognitive ability but also emotionally affects the relatives and caregivers of those diagnosed. Last Saturday, in Yaiza, the theatre company Somos Teatro, led by Esther Vázquez, brought this poignant reality to life with their performance of ‘La Boda’, inspired by the short story ‘El enlace’ by Lanzarote-born writer Pepa González.
The play depicts the daily life of an elderly woman living with Alzheimer’s, who is consumed by the fantasy of celebrating her wedding in a white dress, filled with excitement for the preparations. Two characters assist her in a day centre: one, a nurse who engages with Adela to validate her feelings, and another, an occupational therapist who gently grounds her in reality. This dual approach highlights the different caregiving strategies for those with cognitive decline.
The theatrical afternoon concluded with a discussion led by geriatrician Dr. Elisa Corujo Rodríguez, moderated by González. Dr. Corujo shed light on the existential realities of cognitive deterioration, particularly affecting reasoning, language, and short-term memory. She outlined recent scientific advancements regarding the specific causes of the illness, its symptoms, ongoing treatments, and resources available for patient care and support.
Pepa González remarked on how her story transformed from a personal tale to a universal narrative: “For a moment, it stopped belonging to me and became a story for everyone. Perhaps, that is one of the most beautiful gifts a writer can receive.” The evening also featured a musical performance by talented musicians Alexis Lemes and Adrián Niz.
Yaiza’s Mayor Óscar Noda and Culture Councillor César Rijo attended the event, expressing gratitude for González’s participation, the performance by Somos Teatro, the music from the guest string players, and the audience’s enthusiastic turnout, which filled the Casa de la Cultura Benito Pérez Armas. Together, they created an enriching afternoon of art and social reflection.
