Nearly 300 participants are taking part in the 2026-2027 season of Neuromajo, an initiative supported by Fuerteventura’s Cabildo and the Association Neurolímpica, in collaboration with all six local councils. This year, Padilla Supermercados Spar, Grupo Barceló, and Dany Sport have also joined the project, promoting active ageing among the elderly.
Competing teams include Las Elegidas and Imparables (Antigua), Virgen de la Peña (Betancuria), Las Guirre, Las Lobas, and La Tahona (La Oliva), L@s Atrevid@s, Cofete, Faro, Amigos de Pájara, Pájara se Mueve, and Playas de Pájara (Pájara), Las Apañás, Las Baifas, Maxopuerto, and Los Picarones (Puerto del Rosario), and Camellito and Las Moriscas (Tuineje).
Following an inaugural parade in Caleta de Fuste on 16 October, the 18 teams gathered at Playitas Sports Resort in Tuineje today for the qualifying rounds, which included the Relay, Aro Canario, and Cifras y Letras tests.
Lola García, the island’s president, and Víctor Alonso, the Social Action councillor, welcomed the participants, coaches, and all involved, praising their dedication and acknowledging the support from the councils and technical staff that makes Neuromajo possible.
Local mayors and councillors were present during the event, alongside the Spanish Association Against Cancer, which marked World Breast Cancer Day with a symbolic act.
Besay Rodríguez, part of the organising team, stated, “Fuerteventura continues to be a guiding light for the other islands.”
The competition continues tomorrow, 18 October, with the Colour Figures test and final rounds where four teams will qualify for the regional final in November in Pájara, bringing together the best teams from the Archipelago.
This year also saw the introduction of the Letter Race, held from 2 to 8 October, which travelled across all municipalities in Fuerteventura. Beyond the competition, Neuromajo aims to foster community spirit and promote active ageing among the island’s seniors.
