The San Juan de Dios Hospital in Tenerife has launched a new Gynaecological Oncology Unit aimed at providing comprehensive and compassionate care for women facing complex health issues such as endometrial cancer, cervical, ovarian, and fallopian tube cancers.

The initiative responds to concerning statistics from the Canary Islands Cancer Registry, which reports an incidence rate of 11.7 cases of ovarian cancer per 100,000 women, alongside a high prevalence of endometrial cancer in the region.

This new service offers extensive assistance, from early detection and specialised consultations to surgical evaluations and continuous clinical follow-up, all in a single healthcare environment.

A key feature of the unit is its use of a DaVinci robotic surgical system for minimally invasive procedures. This advanced technology only requires four to five small incisions of 5 millimetres, allowing for greater precision thanks to a three-dimensional view enhanced up to ten times, which aids in complex operations while preserving healthy tissue.

Patients can expect significant benefits, including reduced bleeding and infection risks, less postoperative pain, and the possibility of being discharged within 48 hours, facilitating a quicker return to their daily routines.

Dr. José Antonio Pérez Álvarez, head of the new unit, emphasised the commitment to providing an integrated approach supported by the latest technology, ensuring a personalised experience for women during their diagnostic and treatment processes. He noted that “the precision of the robotic system allows us to perform highly accurate surgical gestures on the affected organ.”

In addition to robotic equipment, the hospital has reinforced its diagnostic capabilities with a new digital colposcope, which enhances the monitoring of the lower genital tract and aids in the early diagnosis of lesions in the cervix, vagina, and vulva.

With the establishment of this specialised unit, San Juan de Dios Hospital reaffirms its dedication to maintaining high standards of patient care, healthcare innovation, and continuous improvement in oncology support, focusing on what patients truly need.
