The 39th edition of the Festival del Sur – Encuentro Teatral Tres Continentes will take place in Agüimes from 20 to 25 October, featuring performances such as El Brote by Argentine company Criolla, Españul by comedian Lamine Thior, and Noche by Alejandro Sawa from Teatro Micomicón. The festival will also hold discussions on human rights, the premiere of a citizen participation project, and free activities throughout the town.
A highlight will be El Brote, starring Roberto Peloni, which will have three performances at the Teatro Auditorio on 20 and 21 October at 7.00 pm, and on 22 October at 9.00 pm. The award-winning play explores the blurring lines between fiction and reality as an actor questions who controls the narrative of his life.
Comedian Lamine Thior will present Españul on 21 October at 9.00 pm at the Teatro Cruce de Culturas. Born in Senegal and raised in Algeciras, Thior draws on his personal experiences to discuss identity, familial expectations, and prejudice through comedy and moments of reflection.
The festival will also feature Afghan journalist Khadija Amin and Kayed Hammad, who will take part in a “Bridge for Peace” discussion on 21 October at 6.00 pm in the Teatro Auditorio. Coordinated by journalists José Naranjo and Nicolás Castellano, this free event will focus on the defence of Afghan women’s rights and the editorial project Menú de Gaza, which seeks to highlight the memory and identity through traditional recipes. Amin and the Hammad family will also join a session of the Gran Canaria Solidaria project on 22 October at 11.00 am in San Telmo, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
Other theatrical offerings include Noche by Alejandro Sawa, which will be shown by Teatro Micomicón on 23 October at 9.00 pm. The play depicts an authoritarian, devout father whose obsession with moral appearances ultimately destroys his family.
On 24 October at 7.00 pm, ¿De dónde venimos? by L’Om Imprebís Teatro will also be staged at the Teatro Auditorio. Inspired by an artwork from Amazonian artist Rember Yahuarcani, the performance combines various disciplines to explore what motivates our actions and the events that shape our lives.
The festival will see the premiere of OR: perhaps life is ridiculous, directed by Javier Lozano and performed by amateur actors selected through an open call. This production will debut on 24 October at 9.00 pm and again on 25 October at 1.00 pm at the Teatro Municipal de Agüimes.
Additionally, the programme includes two Canary Island productions at the Teatro Cruce de Culturas. Sobremesa, by Laboratorio Galdós Internacional, will be performed on 22 October at 9.00 pm, presenting a story set on Christmas Eve 2001 that unveils a family’s secrets and tensions. Meanwhile, DES-estructurados, by Juventas a Escena, will kick off the activities on 20 October at 7.00 pm, featuring a narrative where music connects the lives of a teacher and several teenagers.
