Zonzamas Plus Car Lanzarote claimed a hard-fought 25-23 victory against Lobas Alimerka Oviedo on Wednesday at the Municipal Pavilion of San Bartolomé. The win is significant for Zonzamas as they compete for survival in the league.
From the outset, Zonzamas displayed strong defensive intensity, with goalkeeper Alicia Robles saving two penalties within the first four minutes. The team found their footing despite a brief scare when Ingrid Roger was excluded, allowing Oviedo to close the gap to 3-2.
Zonzamas’ solid defence began to show its strength, with Thalyta Cardoso scoring to make it 6-4 by the 15th minute. The team maintained their lead, prompting Oviedo’s coach to call a timeout after Zonzamas extended their advantage to 8-4. Although Oviedo fought back briefly, Robles made crucial saves, and Claudia Kaulback extended the lead to 10-6.
As the half drew to a close, Zonzamas attempted to push their advantage but could not capitalise on their last possession, leaving the score at 12-9 at halftime.
The second half began with a renewed drive from Zonzamas, and Kaulback scored again to push the lead to 16-11, forcing another Oviedo timeout. Although Oviedo replied with a series of attacks, Zonzamas’ Ingrid Roger scored to restore a four-goal cushion at 20-16. However, Oviedo responded with a surge, eventually equalising at 20-20 with ten minutes left to play.
In a tense final stretch, Malena Guerisoli scored to regain the lead for Zonzamas, who were then levelled again at 23-23 following a timeout from Oviedo. With just seconds remaining, Sergio Hernández, Zonzamas’ coach, called a timeout with the score at 24-23. In the final play, Cecilia Colmenero broke through the Oviedo defence to seal the victory at 25-23.
The win is a much-needed boost for Zonzamas, who have been close to securing points in recent matches. The game, part of the Liga Guerreras Iberdrola, was attended by around 350 fans.
